Energy direction, editorial depth and reliability in commodity price indexes

Gas Daily
Gas Daily had been owned by Pasha Publications for about a year when I arrived in 1990.

Pipeline rate cases at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission were a main focus of our coverage. I relied on veterans Danny Macey and Stephanie Seay to inform me how the industry worked.

The Henry Hub gas futures contract on the New York Mercantile Exchange had just been launched.

The PDF version of the publication was hardly changed through the 1990s.

I became markets editor in 1994, I worked closely with Joan Henderson, the gas group publisher, to keep our data organized as well as accurate.

We calculated the bid week indexes using the volume-weighted average method, in the same manner as the daily indexes.

The Nymex Henry Hub contract became so important to the industry that I had a lot of freedom to cover risk management issues, including in this weekly section.
